Counterplay Games, the developer behind PS5 launch game Godfall, appears to have closed according to fresh LinkedIn posts reporting on layoffs and closures within the gaming industry. It's reported Counterplay Games has closed along with Toadman Interactive and Freejam, with the former best known for Immortal: Unchained and the latter a free-to-play PC title named Robocraft.
PlayStation Lifestyle did some additional digging and discovered the studio was "disbanded" last month after working with Jackalyptic Games on a project. "Unfortunately we were unable to continue our partnership into the new year and CPG was disbanded," an employee wrote.
Best known for being the first game confirmed for PS5 at The Game Awards in 2019, the final product did not live up to the initial wave of excitement its announcement created. With a Metacritic rating of 61, we were slightly less impressed than others, having awarded a 5/10 rating in our Godfall PS5 review.
We concluded: "If everything Godfall had to offer was as good as its satisfying combat system, we would be looking at a darn good PS5 launch game. However, in reality, that's the only thing it has to boast about. An inconsequential loot system, recycled environments, and a frustrating mission structure thwart any sort of enjoyment the game might offer."
The game later received a PS4 version, removing a bit of shine from its original reveal as a big PS5, current-gen offering. Were you a fan of Godfall? Mourn the loss of Counterplay Games in the comments below.

It's s shame they couldn't pull Godfall back from the brink, it was (is) still quite an enjoyable fantasy romp.
Sad to hear for all the teams but for me personally, really sad about Toadman Interactive. I was one of the few who actually really enjoyed Immortal Unchained. So much so I tried really hard for the plat but was one rng collectible short. So frustrated was I, that I actually reached out to Toadman and they responded too.
Still missing that last collectible but will go back and do an ng+ run one day in the hope I’ll get it to drop 🤞.
Bummer. I really enjoyed godfall. It was the first ps5 game I bought and I thought it was really good fun and deserving more than a paltry 5/10. Sad news.
Man that game was so boring. I started playing and was like, oh this could be cool. But the combat system was needlessly cluttered, and it was just the same thing over and over and over again. What a disappointment. Still sorry for those affected by this, though.
Oh God, they've Fallen. for the PS5 and PC, also available on PS4 and Xbox.
Godfather wasn’t a bad game. But it wasn’t great. And that’s what was expected come the PS5 generation.
Don’t know why they thought they could pivot to big fancy AAA-AA style games. Should’ve just continued to work on Duelyst 🤷♂️
Shame, I came to Godfall a few years later after all the updates and thought it was a great game, got the platinum for it as I enjoyed it so much.
It had lovely visuals and the combat was pretty good but the game felt pretty dated and it got boring pretty quick.
I thought it was pretty good, solid 7/10. Combat was really satisfying and punchy. Visually very nice looking and the sound design was decent. But like many have stated, it gets repetitive and honestly doesn't warrant a second playthrough. Doesn't deserve the hate it gets though.
@LordGlarc @DennisReynolds I agree. As much as I really enjoyed my time with godfall it needed a lot of endgame content which it just didn't deliver on. Such a shame as this could have been as good as warframe.

@betasector lolz at the people losing their jobs. So funny.
@Northern_munkey I'm unsure when you last played Godfall but they added a significant amount of post game stuff with missions and new game modes.
The game is way better than a 5/10 right now. But at launch it was buggy as hell with limited content.
@themcnoisy I've not played it for a couple of years..I might have another go as I'm feeling nostalgic now..
I had completely forgotten Godfall ever existed...
Immortal: Unchained was an excellent game, @colonelkilgore. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Them closing is a real shame as I had really hoped to see a sequel some day...
And nothing of value was lost.
